Getting out of a funk: How to push through

A few months I felt as though I was in the ultimate funk. I had no desire to get anything done nor did I put effort into looking put together and it was mostly all due to this funk. Funk is defined as a stage in depression and although I didn’t feel entirely depressed, I felt unmotivated and with no desire to do anything.

When in a funk, You may have ideas and goals but not be encouraged to make them a reality. You slowly start to neglect simple things like getting dressed up or doing your nails simply because you have no desire to do so. And for a while I knew I was in that funk but didn’t do anything about it.

But one day I looked at myself in the mirror and wasn’t happy with what I saw. I knew I was capable of so much more and that if I didn’t do something, I’d stay in this funk forever.

Here are the actions I took that ultimately got me out of that funk. I hope this can be helpful to anyone else who might also be feeling this way.

  1. Pray: Even if you might not believe, I highly recommend this. It’s simple; prayer is talking to God just as you would to another person. Express how you feel and Ask him to help this feeling go away and to bring joy and peace to your heart. The answer may not always be instant but definitely effective.

  2. identify and Acknowledge what is contributing to this funk. Is it your job, a person, your weight, etc?

  3. Take action! Once you are aware of what is causing this funk, do something about it. get out of that environment OR distance away from those people that make you feel this way.

Unhappy with your job? Apply to a new one. Unhappy with how you look? Aim to work on it. This is obviously easier said than done but all it takes is that initial step to get the ball rolling.

  4. Get out and get active: Don’t stay inside and dwell on your funk with pity. Go outside, even if it’s raining. Nature has a way of being a remedy to us humans.

  5. Understand that you are not alone and that you will get through this. we all have highs and lows and so it is very important to push through.

You CAN and WILL get through this!
